 My head is spinning. I don't know what I've found and what I haven't. Today I have found nothing definitive. But, I don't want to forget what I've researched. Here are my findings:

Barnabas Reed

Marth W. Wilson, daughter of Barnabis Reeds and Olive died in Michigan. Death records show her parents were from Allegany, NY and listed her parents names.The 1855 NY State Census said Martha W. Wilson was born in Ontario (Wayne was written first but then crossed off. Perhaps she told the census maker she was from "Macedon" which was in Wayne County at the time of the census but in Ontario County at her birth.) Even still, I believe she is the daughter of my Barnabus Reed.

    Scrolled through the 1820 Palmyra Census. Couldn't find Barnabus Reed.

Ebenezer Reed--Ages fit for Ebenezer and his wife and a son named Ransom.

    1810 Federal Census in Palmyra: Males 0-9 = 3; 10-15 = 2; 26 to 44 = 1. Females 0-9 = 2; 10-15 = 2; 26-44 = 1

Howland Smith:

While scrolling name by name through the 1820 Palmyra Census, same page as Paul Reed, Ira Lapham, and Stephen Peters (Lewis bought land from Stephen Peters) is the name Howland Smith.

        Who is Howland??? Is this the missing name for the initial "H?"

    1820 Census: Males 0-9=1; 10-15=2 (Lewis??); 26-44=1. Females 0-9=2; 10-15=2; 26-44=1

        I looked through the Wayne County and Ontario County Grantor and Grantee indexes for a Howland. Searched through the mid 1830s record books. Found no Howland.

    TODO: Look for Howland in other census records.

Palmyra 1820 Census

        Barnett Peters right next to Henry Wilber. Any relation to Carr Wilbur from Washington, Dutchess, NY?

Lot Stone:

I saved a census record to Lot Stone on my Ancestry.com DNA tree. Need further research. The age of the Lot Stone in the census might not correlate with my Lot Stone, (brother of Lois Stone).

Gedney Venter--Wife Caroline and Two Listings 1870 Census

April 2014 Notes (Update for Research Thoughts Below)
1870 Census

NOTE:  There are two 1870 census records for a "G. VENTER", one in Nebraska City 1st Ward and one in Nebraska City 2nd ward.  It is not standard procedure to list just a first name initial in a census, yet ALL of the first names on the 2nd ward census sheet are initials.

Both census records list him as a teamster, born in England, about 1820, with oldest child born in Michigan and rest of children born in Nebraska. ????? Is it the same household, and he was in the process of moving or had recently moved? Someone other than the family could have given the information?  OR  Did are there two different households?     Also, I (Michelle) have actually looked at both census records and found the same information.

June 2019:
Caroline Small Morgan married Gedney Venter in 1892. Question: Is the Caroline from the 1870 and 1880 census the same person?

New Thought about 1870 Census:
Is Mary Venter a sister-in-law? Gedney has a brother named Thomas. On FamilySearch Thomas has been given a wife named Maria Green.  There are records documenting Thomas's parents as Joseph and Maria/Mary's father as William.

I can't find any death records that identify parents.

TODO: Look for marriage and/or death records of Emma, Thomas, and Robert Venter. Maybe they identify parents.

Reason S. Day--Two Families 1. Eliza Jane Appleton 2. Ida Belle Hall

Reason S. Day married Eliza Jane Appleton.

In 1897, Eliza wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Pensions in Washington, D.C. to seek redress for her husbands desertion and living on his military pension with another wife. An email contact of mine said that she found he left Eliza Appleton and married Ida Belle Hall. In the letter, Eliza claimed that marriage was not legal since he had never divorced her.

Today, (April 22, 2018) I'm researching his other family. There are not many records available. This is what I've found so far.

Documented Information:

* Spouse: Ida Hall.  A marriage record for a daughter, Martha Ellen Day, identifies Reason Day as father and Ida Hall as mother.


* Martha Ellen Day: She applied for a marriage license to be married to Earl Wesley Carter. The application was dates 14 July 1914. Information from the application is as follows: Born 23 March 1895 in Worthington, Indiana. Father was Reason Day, birthplace and occupation were unknown. Current residence was "dead." Mother was Ida Hall, birthplace unknown. Occupation was housekeeping. Current residence was "dead."

Family Tree Information:

I found three family trees that listed Reason S. Day married to Ida Belle Hall. Some of them are more complete than others, but none had access to records or sources documenting their info. Some had three children listed; one had four children listed. This is a compilation of what I found:

Hello,

I'm interested in the family of Reason S. Day, born 1837 in Kentucky. I see that you have his wife, Ida Belle Hall and their children. Do you have any more information about this family? I have looked through Ancestry and can't find many records.

I did find some things:

* There is a marriage record for Martha Ellen Day that lists her parents. She was born in 1895 and married Earl Wesley Carter in 1914. The marriage record said that both her mother and father were deceased. I know that Reason died in 1907, but I have no information on Ida Belle.

* Based on the info from your tree, I searched for Ethel Day married to Laurence Camblin. I found a record for Ethel Held--1900 Census. It lists her as 8 years old and says that she was adopted. The household head was William Held and his wife was Augusta. Ten years later in the 1910 census, I saw that Ethel was living as a boarder in the home of Enoch Camblin.

That is all I could find about their children.

South Perinton Methodist Church and Smith Family

South Perinton Methodist Church and Lewis H. Smith Family Research Notes

Following are notes and impressions from my genealogy trip to Western New York

June 16 through June 20, 2017

              The South Perinton Methodist Church was beautiful and serene. I went there nearly every day of my research trip. The attraction to the cemetery was strong, too strong to resist. The first day I went was Friday the 16th. I had no idea where to find my ancestors grave sites. I started looking behind the Church. There I found a group of inlaws to Sarah Smith Wilson, among who were a son of Mitchell N. Wilson and Sarah; Mitchel’s parents and brothers, including Reverend Robert O. Wilson. On the same row were several Mott Family members.

Description of Smith Family Headstones

              I kept looking and in the west third section of the cemetery I found my direct line ancestors and some anunts, uncles, and cousins. The joy and sweetness are hard to describe. I saw Samuel Mott Smith and his wife, Elizabeth Lapham Beal—the same Elizabeth whose parents are buried in the Quaker Cemetery in Farminton. Just north was a set of headstones for Sarah S. Smith Wilson, Samuel’s sister, and her husband, Mitchel N. Wilson. Buried there also were there son, Oliver Wilson and right next to them, their daughter, Sarah. East a couple of rows is an obelisk which is Lewis H Smith’s headstone and his son’s Lewis H. Smith. Right next to them was the headstone for his wife, Phebe Ann Mott Smith. One more row east is a memorial for Lewis and Phebe’s oldest daughter, Eliza Smith Haight and her husband James and son Nicholas. I believe that her husband and son died in Dutchess County, which is where I found them initially from a cemetery transcription. Either they were moved to this cemetery or when Eiza died in Wayne County, someone built a memorial for the little family. Just west of them are my 4th great grandmother, Phebe Haight Mott, wife of Samuel Mott and his sister, Martha Mott. They are also Edwin Mott’s sisters.

Floris Lint and Her Ancestor Mary Smith Wilkinson

              Like I said, the Spirit was so strong and sweet. I didn’t want to leave. I tried making some headstone rubbings of Lewis’s obelisk. It didn’t work. The years of weather have left the stone pitted and the inscriptions difficult to read. That day I tried crayon. Later I tried sidewalk chalk. I even tried play dough to see if I could get an inscription of various headstones. Nothing was successful. So, I resort to taking pictures and hoping I could manipulate the pictures in Photoshop to read images.

              I lingered long in the cemetery and didn’t want to leave. After a while, I went to leave but came across a little old lady who was tending graves under a tree closer to the Church. I stopped to talk to her. Her name is Floris Lent. She is 95 years old. She has never married and is a family historian. She is descended from the Wilkinson’s in the cemetery and Abraham Lapham’s son, William Sarvey Lapham. He is the brother to my 4th great grandmother, Deborah Lapham. We’re cousins. She started telling me about different people in the cemetery and the founding of the Church.

              She showed me a headstone for Mary Smith who married Joseph Wilkinson, of the same family that street the Church is on was named for. (One or two rows west of Mary and Joseph is a headstone for Lewis Smith, who served in the civil war. Don’t know if there is  a connection, but I needed to record this information while I’m thinking about it.) She said Mary was born in the Poughkeepsie area in Dutchess County. That is the same place Samuel Mott and Phebe Haight are from. I was dumbstruck. Smith? From Dutchess? Could she be a sister to Lewis? I started video recording her stories to see if there is anything I can glean from them for my research.

              She invited me to come to her house, which is right across the street, and she’d show me her genealogy. I took her up on that on Tuesday, June 20. She showed me a lot of her records, and I took some of her Wilkinson research with me to put into FamilySearch. She knew I was interested in the Smith family and the origin of the Church. She told me that her ancestor, Joseph Wilkinson, husband of Mary Smith, paid $1,000 to pay off the mortgage for the Church. She said that the Wilkinsons were involved in the beginning of that Church. Well, it is beginning to appear to me that my family members were deeply involved with this Church, more than I thought. Eventually she found some notes from a Fairport historian. If these records are accurate, Mary and Lewis are not siblings. Still, are they related somehow? I snapped a picture for future reference. Something deep inside tells me there is a reason why I lingered on Saturday; a reason why I met Floris. Perhaps is it just so that I can make sure her records make it to family search. Yet, I feel like there is more. A connection that I can’t explain. It just feels like it’s there.

Smith Connections with Methodist Church

              On Sunday, June 18, 2017, I decided to attend Sacrament Meeting at 9:00 in Palmyra and the Methodist service at this Church at 11:00. I’m so glad I did!! There is a beautiful stained glass window right behind the minister’s pulpit. The dedication plaque reads: “Sacred to the memory of Rev. Oliver Wilson and his wife Helen; Mitchell Wilson and his wife Sarah; Lewis M. Wilson.” My family is intimately involved with this Church! This was made even more clear to me when I combine a snippet of information by I garnered visiting with Church and a record I found while visiting the Wayne County Historian’s office on Monday, June 19.

              The first important point is one I learned on Sunday. This Methodist Church and the Methodist Church in Macedon are interconnected. In fact, one of the ladies I was talking to who attends that congregation said she is secretary for the Church in Macedon. They also told me that the minister sometimes preaches at both churches. The second fact, discovered at the Historian’s office was astonishing. The Historian’s office had a transcription of vital records from the Methodist Church in Macedon. I located a transcription of my great great grandparents wedding!! Samuel Mott Smith and Elizabeth Lapham Beal were married in 1868. Not in a Quaker Church as I have assumed for years. But in the Macedon Methodist Church. It gets even better. They were married by Reverend Robert O. Wilson—Mitchell N. Wilson’s brother! I’m dazed. As I mentioned earlier, this changes a lot!

              In fact, there is something that I need to find about the South Perinton Church that is intricately connected to my Smith family. I don’t know how or what, but I know it; it’s there.

Leonard Smith

              While I’m talking about the Smiths and the research at Lyons, I will insert this here even though it doesn’t pertain to this cemetery. I found some Macedon Vital records that were transcribe from three or four years, about 1846 to 1849. I don’t know where these records came from so I don’t have a primary source. I copied several records, but one death caught my attention. In the book about Mott genealogy, it lists the children of Phebe Haight and Samuel Mott. It says that Millie (Parmelia) had a twin, Lewis H. Smith. That is verified by the headstone in the South Perinton Cemetery. The book also lists another son, Leonard Smith, born in August 1840. I have never found anything relating to Leonard until now. Death record for Leonard H. Smith, died July 17, 1847, native to Macedon, age 6, with dropsy on the brain as cause of death. It all fits. I think I have finally found Leonard. (see notes on Dropsy of the Brain for more information.)

Lois Reed md. Samuel Knowles

2/16/2017 Found a FindAGrave memorial for Lois Reed Knowels in the Farmington Friends Cemetery, Ontario County, NY. She died in 1846, four years before the 1850 census. The memorial identifies husband as Samuel Knowles. It has two links to children:

* John Knowles, Birth: Jul. 27, 1835; Death: Jan. 3, 1838; Son of Samuel S. & Lois Knowles

* Sarah Jane Knowles Kelley; Birth: 1828, New York, USA; Death: 1901, USA; Daughter of Samuel and Lois Knowles; Family links: Parents: Lois Knowles (1815 - 1846) and Spouse: Asa Spencer Kelly (1824 - 1891)

     Asa Spencer Kelley is the son of Asa Kelley and Rebecca Phillips. He is the brother of William Henry Kelley who married Mercy Ann Beal, daughter of Seth Beal and Hannah Gould Smith (info about the Kelleys is according to FamilySearch, but it makes sense).

PROBLEM: When I went to add Sarah Jane Knowles to her parents, Lois Reed and Samuel Knowles, I got a flag that indicated that Sarah would have been born before child-bearing age of mother. 

   * Are the dates recorded wrong?

   * Is Sarah Jane not the daughter of Lois Reed and Samuel Knowles?

   * Is Sarah the daughter of Samuel but not Lois?

FindAGrave did not have pictures of the headstones, and I made a photo request today.

I got an answer to two of my FindAGRave requests, the two in the North Farmington Cemetery. One was for Lois Reed Knowles and the other for her son, John Knowles. On the headstone, it lists her son's birth and death date information. I will add him to their family.

March 4, 2017
Today I finished working through the descendants of Lois Reed and Samuel Knowles. I think I got all of them through about the early part of the 20th century. UPDATE: June 30, 2017: My trip to New York revealed a wife and daughter for John H. Knowles. Daughter is Minnie E. who is buried next to her grandmother, Lois Reed Knowles.

I still don't know about Sarah Jane Knowles. I'll have to look for her records when I visit Macedon this summer.

Misc. Findings--Smiths in Early Macedon/Palmyra, Either Wayne, Ontario, or Monre Counties

February 16, 2017

* 1800 Washington, Dutchess Census records a Samuel Smith. Two boys and two girls under the age of 10; 1 male and 1 female age 26 to 44.


* 1810 Palmyra Census records a Sam. Smith. There is a male listed that would fit the age of Lewis Smith. Some names on same page as Sam Smith are Simon Lapham, Abr. Aldrich Abr. Lapham, Ira Lapham, Peter Aldrich, Gardner Peters (directly above Sam Smith). A little further down on the list is Chas. Smith.

On the next page are some familiar names. Barrett Peters: In an 1828 land transaction, Lewis H Smith purchase land, part of Lot 35. The land directly west of his purchase was owned by Barrett Peters. Stephen Peters: Lewis and Elias Smith purchased land from Stephen Peters (and his wife Larry) in 1829.

This is a clue that Sam Smith was settling in an area of West Palmyra that later became West Macedon.


* 1820 Federal Census
There are four Samuel Smiths living in Ontario County in 1820. The locations are: Ontario, Ontario; Phelps Ontario; Pittsford Ontario; and Pittsford Ontario.

This same census shows two Elias Smiths living in Ontario County. The locations are: Pittsford, Ontario and Mendon Ontario


South Perinton Cemetery, Monroe County

For a long time, I was puzzled about why so many members of the Smith Family would be buried in the South Perinton Cemetery, South Perinton United Methodist Church rather than in Macedon Village where other family members are buried. Today I realized how close the cemetery is to where they lived.

1. They were probably Methodists and wanted to be buried there.
AND
2. This church is only 2.5 miles from the location of Lewis H Smith's Farm.

Location of Monroe and Ontario Counties

Until recently, I have focused almost all of my searches in Wayne County. This is only good so far since Wayne County was formed in April 1823 and Macedon was formed in January 1823. Before then, Macedon and Wayne were part of Ontario County.

Monroe County was formed in 1821. West Macedon, where the Smiths lived, is only 1 1/2 plot of land east of the Monroe County boundary.

In the book The History of Wayne County 1877 it says this: Paul Reed was an old-time and life-long settler in Macedon. His son Nathan is living at Fairport; his daughter, Diantha Blackman, is a resident of the town, while two daughters are living in the west.

Fairport is now part of Monroe County.

Changing Names in Monroe County


Today there are 19 towns and 10 villages in Monroe County, as well as a number of hamlets. Monroe County itself was formed in 1821 from parts of Western New York originally in Ontario County. The two towns of Ontario County that became Monroe County were Northampton (west of the Genesee River) and Northfield (east of the Genesee). Northampton was formed in 1797, while Northfield was formed in 1796.


Boyle: later became Penfield and Perinton
There is a Nathan Stone in the 1810 Census, Boyle, Ontario, New York. Lois Stone (who married Paul Reed) had a brother named Nathan Stone, b. 1778.

[Caleb Hopkins] His hometown was "gaining ground" too and in 1803, the town known as Northfield changed its name to Boyle, ostensibly due to too many towns and communities in New York by the name of Northfield.... An area of land was separated from the huge town of Boyle in 1810, and became known as Penfield. The town of Perinton was formed from another section of Boyle in 1812, and after these divisions, the remaining community was called Smallwood. .... Thus Northfield, which became Boyle, which became Smallwood, was divided one last time into two towns. One section became Brighton and the honor of naming the remaining land was given to Colonel Caleb Hopkins. He chose the name Pittsford after his childhood home of Pittsford, Vermont.

Gates: Originally Town of Northampton, Ontario County
1800 Census shows a Moody Stone living in Northampton. Lois Stone has a brother named Moody.

The Town of Gates was originally known as the Town of Northampton in Ontario County. In 1813 it became known as Gates, named after General Horatio Gates, an officer of the American Revolution. Isaac Dean became the first settler around 1799. At several periods of time parts of the town were taken by Rochester. Sections of Gates included in the map collections are Genesee Rapids, Bethlem and Gates Centre.

Fairport: Originally part of Perinton
The Town of Perinton was established in 1812. The early settlers of the town were William Walker and Glover Perrin. Area of settlement included in the map collections are Bushnell's Basin, Egypt and the Village of Fairport. The Village of Fairport was incorporated in 1867.

Children of Nathan Stone Reed, Son of Paul Reed and Lois Stone; by Two Wives, Mary Tedman and Mary Rice

Nathan Stone Reed married three times: Mary Ann Tedman, Mary A. Rice, and Sarepta Simpson. He had children with Mary Tedman and Mary Rice. FamilySearch lists the families as follows:

Mary Tedman Reed: 11/6/2016--FS had two records for Mary Tedman Reed, one with the mother of Mary Tedman and the other with the mother of Mary Rice. I don't have records for the first Mary Tedman Reed. Is she the same person as Mary Tedman Reed (1843-1910) born to Mary Rice. Or is she a different person and the last child of Nathan and Mary Tedman Reed. The records are so sketchy back then, I don't know if I will every be able to find evidence either way. My hunch is that they are two separate individuals and the first Mary Tedman Reed died, perhaps with her mother, and that the second Mary Tedman (1843) was named after her older half-sister.

Descendants of Robert Tedman Reed and Mary Ann Hoag

This post is for the Robert Tedman Reed family. Robert is the son of Nathan Stone Reed and Mary Ann Tedman. Nathan Stone Reed is the son of Paul Reed and Lois Stone, my direct ancestors. Much of the research has been done for many of the children and this post will just summarize my findings for them. Some children need a lot more research, those children may end up getting their own blog post if the research become to involved.

1. Emma Jane Reed 1854–

11/11/2016. Starting on descendants here. The 1900 Census says she gave birth to five children with four living. I found a headstone on Find A Grave that identifies the missing child, Ethel May Furman. I needed to correct some ages of the other children on FS, which were verified by marriage, census records, etc.

    Daughter, Iva Reed Furman married in 1900. She and Orin Lemon Morrison had several children. Most of them are identified and added to FS. Because they were born so recently (more than half after 1905), I did not add any of the children to my Ancestry.com.
    Son, Elmer Ray Furman. Records show he was married to Josephine, he lived in South Dakota and then moved to Wisconsin where he was burried. U.S. GenNet has a index of the Loyal City Cemetery in Wisconsin. The record identifies both Elmer and Josie's death information. It also lists their marriage date and Josie's maiden name and her parents name. The records were taken in part from the Neillsville Court House record.

3. Charles White Reed 1853–1946

The 1910 Census indicates that Mary gave birth to 11 children but only 10 were still living. Yet, the 1910 Census indicates that she gave birth to six children and six were still living. His obituary is recorded on Find A Grave. It says that he was the father of only six children.

Son, Clyde Welby Reed. Most of this research was already completed in FS. 11/7/16 I updated a few dates and merged records for his wife, Mabel M. Stoner. There are children who were born more recently than 110 years ago, and I did not add them to FS, nor to my Ancestry records. They are available on the census records.

Son, Walter Owen Reed. Find A Grave shows his wife as Alta Irene Alford Reed with a daughter, Jessie Marie Merritt Carlson (maiden name of Merritt). FS identifies Walter's wife simply as Alta Merritt. Based on the Find A Grave memorial, I believe that Alta was married previously before she married Walter Reed. TODO 11/7/2016: Find proof about Alta's previous marriage and correct FS records.
   RESOLVED 11/9/2016: Lela Belle Alford is the same person as Alta Merritt. Evidence supporting this conclusion:
* Iowa Marriage records: Lela B. Alford married James Merritt on 10 February 1904 in Cherokee County.
* 1910 Federal Census: James (transcribed as Jones in census) and Lela appear with two children, Clayton and Jessie (transcribed as Jennie) in Cherokee County.
* Iowa Birth records: Jessie Marie Merritt is born in 1906 to James Merritt and Lela Belle Alford.
* SS Applications and Claim Index: Madeline Merritt, born 7 April 1913 to James R. Merritt and Lela B Alford.
* 1925 Iowa State Census: Alta Merritt (note the name change this time) is shown as the mother of Clayton, Jessie, and Madeline. She is also listed next to Walter Reed on the census, indicating they were neighbors.
* 1930 Federal Census: Alta Reed and Walter Reed are in the same household and married. Madeline Merritt is also in the same household and is the stepdaughter to the head of household.

The rest of the sons (Charles Bernard Reed, John Silas Reed, Ivan David Reed, and George Robert Reed) were straight forward and mostly input already into FS. I updated Ancestry.com. Many sources for the sons, though, I didn't take time to attach. They are in the ignored section if further investigation is needed.

Emma Reed was born in Wayne County, NY according to the NY State Census in 1865 and 1875. By 1875 she was living in Perinton, Monroe, New York.

Research:

Emma Francis Reed Goodwin: In her mother's obituary found on Find A Grave, she is identified as Mrs. Frankie Goodwin of New York. Question about her name: Is Frankie her nickname for Francis? Or is Frankie her husband's name?

        Found (10/30/2016): There is an entry in the 1910 Census; Webster, Monroe, New York, for a Emma F. Goodwin with two children, George W. Goodwin b. 1885 and Fred E. Goodwin b. 1892. I found a headstone for George W. Goodwin. He was born in 1885 in West Walworth, Wayne, New York. He died in 1976, Syracuse, Onondaga, New York. Because this data sounds very plausible, I have added these children to my tree in Ancestry.com. However, I don't know if this is accurate.

Resolved 11/1/2016: Found marriage record for George W. Goodwin to Olive Dorcas Willis. It identifies his parents as Emma F. Reid Goodwin and Eli Goodwin. Will now attach the records and update the family in both Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com


Whitney Connection

      Found (10/30/2016): 1900 Census for Stephen C. Reed and [wife] Reed [the bottom of the page is blurred.] I turned to the next page and found two more entries for the household of Stephen C. Reed: Daisy Reed, daughter. AND Stephen Whitney, grandson, born May 1879.

        Found (10/30/2016): Whitney spouse---There is a FamilySearch record for an Emma Reed (M6W6-L9S) born about 1857 who married Seth Whitney (M6W6-LMD) in Maine. Is this the same person? It is plausible because of information on the 1900 Census household of Stephen C. Reed. On October 31, 2016, I reserved the temple ordinances for both this Emma Reed and Seth Whitney. I don't want to merge the Emma Reeds yet because I'm not certain they are the same person. I think they are, but need more information.
        ACTION (3/17/2016) Upon further research, I believe that this Emma F. Reed is not the same person as Emma Francis Reed. (See notes about Seth H. Whitney below.) Therefore, I unreserved the temple work for both of them.

      Found (10/31/16): Emma Reed was living with her father, Stephen Reed in Perinton, Monroe, NY in the 1875 New York State Census. Could the Maine marriage record date be wrong on the index? TODO: Look for actual marriage record, of Seth Whitney and Francis Reed: FHL Film: Vital records, 1849-1939 Family History Library, 12839

     Found (10/31/2016): There is a Stephen C. Whitney who lived several years in Tacoma, Washington, and died there. Find A Grave for him says that he was born in Fairport, Monroe, New York on May 11, 1878. The 1900 Census record says he was born in May 1879. There are several other census records for Stephen C Whitney (sometimes with middle initial "L.") in Tacoma. They put his birth year anywhere from 1878 to 1882. All of these records identify his wife as Rose. This is a good, possible match for Stephen Whitney, grandson of Stephen C. Reed. Done--TODO, find his death certificate and see if it identifies his parents. Start with FHL Film: 2033392.

      Found (3/17/17) Film 2033392 only contains an index of the death records. The index does not identify his parents.



Puzzle Pieces about Seth H. Whitney

Although I believe that Seth H. Whitney is not Stephen C. Whitney's father, I still have a marriage record for Seth H Whitney to Emma F. Reed in 1873. Therefore, I want to document what I found about Seth H. Whitney.

Maine Birth Records: Charles F. Whitney, born 17 August 1886 [note, this is 2 1/2 years before marriage--I looked at a copy of the original, hand-written record and the date is as transcribed]. Birth place, North Vassalboro, Kennebec. Name of mother: Hannah Getchell; residence of mother: Getchell's Corner, No Vassalboro, Kennebec. Name of father: Seth Whitney; birth of father: Solon ME.

Maine Marriages: 20 April 1889, Seth H. Whitney and Hannah N. Getchell are married in Vassalboro, Kennebec, Maine.

1900 Federal Census: Vassalboro, Kennebec Maine; Seth Whitney is listed with his wife, Hannah. They have been married for 12 years. It is reported that Hannah had given birth to one child and one child was still living. Seth is also living with his son, Charles F. Whitney. [Note: in the succeeding census, she had zero children.]

1910 Federal Census: Vassalboro, Kennebec, Main; Seth Whitney is listed with his wife, Hannah. They have been married 20 years. It is reported that Hannah had given birth to zero children. Seth is also living with his son, Charles F. Whitney. [Note: in the previous census she had one child.]

1912 Hannah Whitney has a probate record. Two of her points were very interesting: she owned the house and property not Seth, and Charles's name or relationship to her are not clear. The record reads:
   "4th  I give bequeath and devise to my husband Seth H. Whitney the sum of One Thousand Dollars in money. Also the house and lot now occupied by me....
   "5th  I give bequeath and devise to Charles F. Whitney (so-called) the sum of One Thousand Dollars in Money. Also the Orchard lot....


1880 Census, I found a Seth Whitney and an Emma Whitney his wife with child Cora Whitney. Seth was born about 1853. Emma was born about 1854. Cora was born about 1868. As I researched, I found a Cora Pratt married to Richard Pratt in the 1900 Sagadahoc, ME Census. Richard has a mother-in-law named Emma F. Whitney who is divorced. Cora's death certificate says her mother is Emma Whitney and her father is a man named John Bragdon, note the different last name than Whitney. I have also found TWO other different Emma F. Whitney's, both living in Maine. One was married to Thomas. The other is single and sister to head of household, Edwin. She was born in December 1853 to Willard and Mary. There is an Emma F. Whitney in the 1860 census in the household of Isaac and Amanda.

I'm too confused with all the Emma Whitney's. But, based on Stephen C. Whitney's marriage record, I don't believe any of these are related to me. Therefore, I'm unreserving their temple work.

Today I'm working on the descendants of Stephen Carpenter Reed and Emma Jane Webster.

I found an obituary of Emma J. Webster on Find A Grave. It is difficult to read. As near as I can tell it is transcribed as:

"This morning at 6:4[?] the relentless angel of death noiselessly entered the home of Stephen C. Reed of 747 South Main Street and saddened all the inmates in removing from their number a beloved wife and mother. Mrs. Reed had been complaining all winter and spring but she did not give up and take her bed until about four weeks ago when she lay down never to rise again. After being confied to her room less than a month she was carried of by [dro--- ?] [dro-ay ?] and calmly and peacefully passed to her eternal reward.

"Emma J. Webster was born in a place well known to all readers of American fiction, Cooperstown, New York. She had passed her sixty-fifth birthday anniversary when she was called home, having been born on a historic date, February 22, 1838 [?]

"While still a young girl she removed with her parents to Philadelphia where she grew to young womanhood and was married to Stephen C. Reed. After her marriage she removed with her husband to Walworth, New York and from their to Fairport N Y. In 1878 they came to Lima and have lived since in the home which was her last earthly home.

" Six daughters were born to her of whom five remain to mourn for a mother one having preceed her by a few years in the bourne [?] whence no traveler ever returns. The children are Mrs. Frankie Goodwin of New York State.  Mrs. M. S. Lovell who died three years ago at Oswego NY. Miss Clara S. Reed, principal of [?] Pine Street School building. Mrs. Ella Morris. Miss Alice Reed and Miss Daisy Reed all of this city.

"The funeral arrangements are not all completed owing to the fact that the pastors of the Presbyterian Church are both out of the city. The funeral will take place at the house at 2 o clock Tuesday afternoon and the remains will be laid away in Woodlawn. In their hour of deep distress the husband and daughters have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends."

1. Emma Francis Reed: This research log grew very big. I moved it to it's own post, dated 10/31/2016. married Goodwin. Obituary callers her Mrs. Frankie Goodwin. Is that her middle name? Or is that her husband's name? They live in New York.
        There is an entry in the 1910 Census; Webster, Monroe, New York, for a Emma F. Goodwin with two children. On my Ancestry.com family tree, I have her with two husbands, last names of Goodwin and Whitney. I don't know where I got those two names from, though.

2. Mary Etta Reed: She married Myron Lovell and died in 1900. 11/2/2016 Her children were easy to find on Ancestry and FamilySearch. They are now added to my family tree through the early 1900s.

3. Clara S. Reed Wilson: She died June 2, 1950 in Lima, Allen, Ohio. 11/2/2016 She and her husband are added to my family tree on Ancestry.
I found an obituary on FindAGrave for Clara. It reads:
   "Mrs. Clara Reed Wilson.
   "Final rites for Mrs. Clara Reed Wilson, 85 of 718 Greenlawn-av, retired Washington School principal, will be at 2 p.m. in Welker Brothers Funeral Home.The Rev. Phillip Sorce will officiate with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
    "Mrs. Wilson died Friday in Memorial Hospital. She was born October 22, 1864 in Fairport, N.Y. From 1882 to 1911 Mrs. Wilson taught school and later served as principal of Washington school. She also was a teacher in the Lima citizenship classes.
   "A member of Olivet Presbyterian church, Mrs. Wilson was an organizer and charter member of the Chautauqua Club. Her husband, William Wilson, died in 1921.
   "Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Morris 1545 W. High-st and Mrs. Vernon Woods, Van Wert.
   "The body will remain in the funeral home until burial."

4. Ella Tedman Reed: married Arthur J. Morris. They had two sons, Paul Reed Morris and Kenneth Arthur Morris. 11/2/16: Paul's death certificate indicates he was married. It looks like the informant of his death was Celia Burket [?] Morris. FindAGrave shows there is a Cecelia Burket Morris burried in the same cemetery. But, there are not pictures or details of either headstone. TODO 11/2/16: I'm going to let Ancestry.com and family search see if they can come up with any record hints about Paul's wife. Resolved: Find A Grave pictures of the headstone/crypt cover showed Cecelia Burket married to Paull Reed Morris.

Kenneth A. Morris died in 1931. He was divorced at the time of his death. Death certificate identifies his wife as Catherine Bauer. They were married in 1914.

5. Alice Webster Reed: I found an obituary on FindAGrave for Alice. It reads:
"Lady Passes Away in Cincinnati. News of Demise of Alice W. Reed Received Here Yesterday Morning. A Telegram was received here yesterday afternoon announcing the death of Alice W. Reed at Cincinnati. Deceased is the daughter of S.C. Reed of 747 south Main street and was aged 34 years. Particulars concerning death were not given. The remains will reach Lima this afternoon at four o'clock. No funeral arrangements have been made." Lima Times Democrat (Lima, OH) 01-16-1905; page 8

6. Daisy Reed: As near as I can tell, she married three different times: Thomas Virgil Idle, divorced in 1910 or 1911. George Willard Kepler, married in 1911. George had been married and divorced also. George Williard Kepler died in Florida in 1941. Her death certificate identifies her as widowed, Daisy Myra Reed Woods and that she died in Van Wert, Ohio. Her sister Clara's obituary indicates her name was Mrs. Vernon Woods. The death certificate says she was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Lima, Ohio. I cannot find a memorial on Find A Grave. I don't know what last name her headstone would contain.
     11/4/2016 I found a William Vernon Woods (FS number L2SN-T77) who lived most of his life in Van Wert County, Ohio. He was married to Virginia "Virgie" Siler. She died in 1936. In W.V.Woods 1942 WWII draft record, it doesn't indicate that he is married. His daughter, Mary Virginia Woods, is the person listed who would always know his address.
     I believe that this is the same person that Daisy Reed married after George died. I can't find proof, yet. though. 11/6/2016. Resolved: "Mr W V Woods; in the Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center Obituary Index, 1810s-2013; mentioned his wife as Virgie Siler and another family member as Daisy Keplar.

Mary Winegar b 1901 Daughter of Edmond Wallace Winegar and Anna Catherine Nielsen

I've been looking at the descendants of my Sumner ancestors. One family in particular are the subjects of this post. Edmond Wallace Winegar (KPW4-9FZ) and  his wife (L4JG-3BG). They had ten children listed in their family. The youngest child was Mary Minnie Winegar. She is actually two different people.

Evidence:

* There are two different birth records, one for Minnie and one for Mary. Each of the records says that the girl is a twin.

* The 1910 Census indicates that the mother, Anna Catherine Nielsen, had given birth to 11 children. 

TODO:

Find birth and death records of Minnie and Mary. I need the death record to see how much temple work to do.

I sent email requests to several family trees on Ancestry.com who had Minnie Mary Winegar in their family trees. These trees all listed the death date as 1910. I wrote asking for more information.

DEAD END: I did an online search of "Burial transit permits, 1938-1968 ; death records index, 1880-1954." I searched using the last name Winegar. Nothing appeared that would have matched Mary or Minnie.

Diantha Reed Blackman

In my records, Paul Reed and Lois Stone Reed have a daughter whose name is listed as Diantha Blackman Reed. At first I thought that might be a middle name that was taken from an ancestor's last name. As I have done research, I'm beginning to believe that Diantha Reed married Lewis Blackman.

I have found Diantha Blackman in Macedon, Wayne, New York in the 1850, 1870, and 1880 Census records. She was born about the same time as Diantha Reed.

TODO: Look for land records or probate records that might list her as an heir to her father and mother's estate or connected in some other way to the Reed family.


1/29/2017: Searched grantee records for Wayne County: Grantee index v. A-C 1823-1869; Bla for Blackman, Lewis and/or Diantha. Could not find anything. Also looked through the BLs for transactions on Macedon. Still couldn't find anything.

2/17/2017. I found a census record that might have Imogene. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1870usfedcen&indiv=try&h=28766086

It includes:  Isabelle Hill, age 1; Mary Hill, age 7/12. Census says she was born in Dec of 1869. I can't find this Mary. There is another Mary (Mary Elizabeth) born several years later.
    Disproved: Upon further analysis, I realized the Irene is the daughter who was born December 1869.

RESOLUTION 2/25/2017:
After analyzing all the children's information and reading the obituary several times, I decided to add Imogene after Myron and before William. The obituary listed all the other children in birth order, so I conclude that Imogene would have been inserted in birth order as well. I believe she died as a young child or an infant--sometime before the 1870 Federal Census, as all other children were listed on the census with the exception of the oldest who was living in a different home.

Francis Kelly Purdy, born 1864 might not be the son of Jason Purdy, born 1829 and Sabrina Beal born 1832

There is a discrepancy on the census records about who Frank's parents are. The 1880 census says he is Jason Purdy's nephew. The 1900 census says that Jason Purdy is the father. But, in both records, it shows that Jason Purdy was born in Pennsylvania and that Frank's father was actually born in New York.



Moreover (as noted in the last post), some FamilySearch records indicate that Sabrina Beal born 1801 married Eliab Purdy. The last post questioned that accurateness of that record. This is further questioned by the fact that Sabrina Beal (b. 1801) is the aunt of the Sabrina Beal (b. 1832) who married Jason Purdy.

More research needs to be done.


RESOLVED--Futher Research Showed NOT Resolved.
Below is the first conclusion. Following that is the what I found through further research:

Two sets of records:

1. I found death records for both Jason and Sabrina. Sabrina's record indicates that she was married. She had two children, one living. Her father is Seth Beal. Frank Purdy signed the death record. Jason's death record showed that he was widowed and that his parents are Eliab Purdy and Mary Harverd. Jason's death record also indicates that he was born in New York and that both of his parents were born in Massachusetts.

2. FindAGrave has pictures of headstones. The headstones indicate birth and death dates for Jason, Sabrina, Frank, and Frank's wife, Anna. They indicate that Sabrina was born in Macedon, NY. There is also a memorial that says that Frank married Anna Parker. Anna's headstone is also there with the others.

SOLUTION BASED ON RECORDS RECORDED ABOVE

The following makes sense to me:
William Kelly and Mercy Beal Kelly are the birth parents of Frank Kelly Purdy. He was born December 1864 in Marne Michigan. Mercy died three months later in March 1865. At that point Jason Purdy and Sabrina Beal Purdy took Frank in to their home to raise him. That is why he is listed in the 1880 census as the nephew. By the 1900 census, it is like Jason and Sabrina are his parents, and the census taker lists him as such.

The obituary of Myrtie Rosengrant says she is survived by her brother Frank Kelly Purdy. Myrtie Kelly is the daughter or William Kelly and Mercy Ann Beal. She married Horace Rosengrant. Thus, Myrtie and Frank are brother/sister with the same parents.


More proof is listed on the marriage certificate of Frank Kelly Purdy to Lydia Moorehood. It identifies his father as William Kelly and his mother as Sabrina Beal. I believe the "Sabrina" part was an error and it should have read "Mercy". But, relationships blur after living with an "adopted mother" your whole life."

Because Frank Kelly Purdy was raised by Jason and Sabrina, the headstone is located with them.

10/25/2016 Update Work on Anna Purdy

~~ Anna Purdy is not the child of Jason and Sabrina. Death certificate of Jason Purdy says he is the parent of "none" children. Do not know who Anna Purdy belongs to. I did preliminary searches on both Ancestry and FamilySearch for records about Anna Purdy. I couldn't find anything. I tried to see if Sabrina Sheldon and Joseph Thomas had a daughter named Anna. I couldn't find many records for them. I also checked to see if Jason's brother, Ephraim, had a daughter named Anna. I found an Ephraim who married Anna. I couldn't find anything definitive there, either.

Today I removed Anna Purdy L2FP-3J2 ​as a child of Jason and Sabrina.




William Kelly married again after Mercy died (as per headstone on FindaGrave that lists both wives.)--Ruth A. Knowles added and temple work reserved.

Mercy Ann Beals death date is wrong.--Corrected

Frank Kelly Purdy does not have a spouse.--Married twice. Both added and temple work reserved

Today I was praying for help with my family history research. I would really like to find some more of my relatives in the Palmyra area before summer of 2017 when we take a family trip to Palmyra. I felt impressed to look at the family of Hannah Gould Reed (b. 1806). Hannah G. Reed Beal is my 3rd Great Grandmother.

I went into FamilySearch to Hannah's parents, Lois Stone and Paul Reed.  Paul Reed's records indicate that he has more than one wife for the same time period. So, I switched the view to Lois Stone. I looked at the descendancy view to begin my work.

The oldest child is Sabrina Reed. FS shows a spouse of Eliab Purdy. However, FindAGrave has a couple of records that raise questions about this marriage. There is a headstone for Eliab Purdy in Ohio. Linked with that memorial is a daughter, Mercy Ann (Purdy) Kibby. Mercy's  memorial reads: "Dgt. of Eliab and Mary (Hartford) Purdy. Wife of Harmon Kibby." More research is needed to determine any information about Sabrina Reed.

I also looked at Nathan Stone Reed. FS has him with three wives: Mary Ann Tedman, d. 1835; Mary A. Rice, d. 1860; and Sarepta Simpson, married after 1860. The FindAGrave memorials indicate children for each of the Mary's. On FS, there were several children attached to Mary Ann Tedman who were born after she died. Today I merged some of the inaccurate records and moved the children to Mary A. Rice.

There is still a lot of research to be done with this family. I didn't start research or attaching records until I had the family cleaned up a bit. This is where I will pick up when I come back. My first TODO, though, I think, is to get this family made into a tree and loaded onto Ancestry.com. Then I will work with both Ancestry and FS to research, source, and work on this line of my family.

Sophia Day and Charles Cockriel--Evidence that Supports Their Marriage

I was given some information that Sophia Day married Charles Cockriel. I could find no record of his marriages, either his first or second wife. So, I pieced together the following information:

Charles Cockriel married Sophi (I believe Day). Sophia died between the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census records. By 1910, Charles had remarried, a woman named Francis. The census indicates it is a second marriage for both of them.. The marriage of Charles Cockriel (b. January 1870 in Indiana) and Sophia Day (b. 1873 in Indiana) is verified by their children's marriage records.

* 1910: Ruth Cockriel married Frank Rosenbaum. The marriage records list Sophia A. Day and C.W. Cockriel as her parents.

* June 1920: Mary Francis "Cochrill" married Nathan H. Baynes. Father is Chas. W. Cochrill and mother is Sophia

* November 1920: Goldie Edna Cockriel (b. 1901), married John F. Trail. Father is Charles Cockriel and Francis Day. I believe this is a mistake and that the birth mother actually was Sophia Day since Charles Cockriel never married Francis Day.

This evidence is supported by the 1910 census. Fanny M. Cockriel has had one child and one child is living. Also in the household is Audrey Lanham, step son to Charles Cockriel. The natural conclusion is that Audrey is Fanny's only child.

* May 1922: Vernie Cockriel (b. 1904) married James G. Lomax. Father is Charles W. Cockriel and mother is Sophia Broadwell. Again, I believe this is a mistake. The 1910 census says C.W. Cockriel only married twice, Sophia and Fanny. I wonder if Broadwell is the maiden name of the second wife, Fanny.

Jennie Alwida Johnson and John V. Carter's Children

I'm so excited. Today I found three children for Jennie!! A couple of weeks ago I found another child of hers.

Jennie was married in 1883 and died in 1899. Therefore, she missed the 1890 census record. Here are the records that I found:

* Child of Jennie J. Carter, buried 15 April 1899
- Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. The plot number is: section 2, Lot 109. Find A Grave Memorial# 45901042

This is Jennie's burial and her child's. I assume that both died with complications of child birth. But, I don't have any documentation to that end yet.


* Margaret Louise Carter, b. 1896 or 1897; died 1991
- Sons of American Revolution application; Margaret's son applied for a membership. The application listed her full name as Margaret Louise Carter Ditrich. Her husband is Alvan Dittrich. and her two parents are John Vestal Carter and Jennie Johnson. The application also lists marriage and death dates.

Margaret was not living with her father in the 1900 census. I looked for Margaret on the 1900 Census and found a Margaret Carter living in Indianapolis. His name is Francis Carter. He was born about 1847. His parents are from Ohio.

In the 1900 census, John V. Carter's parents are identified as being born in Ohio. This is different than the 1910 and 1920 census records which list their birth place as Indiana. To verify this information, I looked at the marriage record for John Carter and Jennie Johnson. The marriage record says his parents are: Jas W Carter and Susan Carter.

The 1870 Census for James Carter and Susan Carter have a John V. Carter living with them. In the census, both of them are listed as being born in Ohio.

Therefore, I conclude that the Margaret living with Francis is the daughter of John V. Carter and Jennie Johnson. The 1900 Census also lists two other children, a niece, Susan Carter, and a nephew, Hugh Carter. I also conclude that both of these children are also children of John and Jennie.

Ethel Mae Mabee b. 1882

Today I found three marriages for Ethel Mae Mabee, daughter of Gabriel D. Mabee and Ida Jane Clow. I am not sure how the first two marriages fit together, but I have plenty of records documenting the marriage to George Schwartz.

Marriage to George Schwartz:

The last marriage was to George Schwartz from Ashford, Cattaraugus, New York. This was proven by a marriage record which listed Ethel's parents as well as the fact that it was her second marriage. In addition, the 1930 census record shows Ethel Schwartz being born in South Dakota with her father being born in Canada and her mother being born in Illinois.

Marriage to Harvey N. Best

There is a marriage record for Ethel M. Mobee (This is the indexed spelling. I have not seen the actual record.) This record identifies a marriage to Harvey N. Best on December 26, 1906, in Lake City, Calhoun, Iowa. Her parents are listed as G.D. Mobee and Ida J. Clow. This is definitely Ethel May Mabee.

Ancestry.com has another marriage record for Harvey N. Best in 1910. This record lists him as divorced. South Dakota Marriages: Marriage Record for Harvey N. Best

Marriage to John D. Allyn

Ethel has three children with the last name of Allyn. The first was born

The 1930 census record for Little Valley, New York lists two of George's step children with the last name of Allyn. I found a couple of obituary records for Lyle Harvey Allyn that identify his father as John D. Allyn and his mother as Ethel Mabee Allyn.

The documentation for the that proves the census record is Ethel May Mabee comes from two different obituary records. There is a record on Ancestry.com that is an index of people mentioned in Lyle Allyn's obituary. Among those names are John D. Allyn and Ethel Mabee Allyn.

I also found a transcript of the obituary on GenealogyBank.com.  The obituary reads as follows:

Possible Conclusion

Lyle Harvey Allyn was born Februay 1, 1907, but Ethel M. Mabee wasn't married to Harvey N. Best until December 26, 1906. It is possible that Lyle H. Allyn was the illegitimate child of John D. Allyn. Lyle's middle  name is Harvey, which is the same name as her spouse.

It is possible that the marriage didn't last, and Ethel followed John D. Allyn to New York where they had two more children before that relationship ended for good. Was she ever married to John D. Allyn? It is possible that the answer is no. The marriage record of her marriage to George Schwartz indicated that it was her second marriage.

John is brother to Gedney Venter. He is son of Joseph Venter and Elizabeth Gedney.

John and Jane's children are:
