Harry Pagin b. 1857, Indiana; and Ida Winslow

From a blog post dated March 22 I talked about two Henry Pagins in Porter County Indiana. I have new evidence about the second Henry Pagin:

Documentation for Henry Pagin born 1857

1870 Census; Henry Pagin, age 13, son in the household of Samuel and Elizabeth Pagen, South Bend Wards 2 and 3, St. Joseph, Indiana. Samuel was 41 years old, which puts his birth around 1829.

1880 Census, Harry Pagin [note the name change from Henry to Harry], age 23 son in household of Samuel and Elizabeth Pagen. This is the same person as Henry Pagin--family members are the same.

Indiana Marriage Collection: Harry Pagin married Ida Winslow; December 24, 1888, in Porter County, Indiana.

1900 Census; Harry Pagin, Age 43; Chicago Ward 32, Cook, Illinois; head of household. Wife is Ida Pagin; married 11 years; 0 children. Also in household are Mary Underwood, sister, age 31, and Eugene Underwood, nephew, age 3. And a servant, Hilda Swensen

1910 Census; Harry Pagin, age 52, Washington, Porter, Indiana; Ida Pagin, wife; married 22 years; doesn't list if there were children born to Ida.

1920 Census; Harry Pagin, age 62; Center, Porter, Indiana, Ida Pagin, wife, age 54; Ann Winslow, age 82, mother-in-law.

Find A Grave: Harry Pagin; 1857 to 1927; Valparaiso, Porter, Indiana

Familysearch.org Family Tree lists Henry Pagin, born 1833 son of James Joseph Pagan and Susannah Fosher. Siblings to Henry Pagin include Samuel Pagin, born 1828. Samuel is the right age to be the father of Harry Pagin, born 1857.

Conclusion

Harry/Henry Pagin, b. 1857; lived in Porter County is nephew of Henry Pagin, born 1833, who also lived in Porter County at one point.

Thomas E. Watts Spouse and Death Location

19 September 2011.
I have personal correspondence that said Thomas E. Watts died in Santa Clara and was cremated. She listed his wife as Mae.

I found Thomas Watts in 1920 and 1930 census records in Santa Clara.  Wife was Mary A.

17 March 2012.

Found census 1910 Census record in New Mexico with

* Curtis Berry, stepson to head, born in Maine
* Luella Watts, sister to head, born in Illinois, born 1887

In the 1920 and 1930 Census records for Thomas E. Watts in Fremont, Santa Clara, his birth is 1870 in Indiana. Mary A Watts' birth is 1867 in Maine.

Found Mary A. Watts on California Death Index,
born 6/17/1867; mother: Millett; father: Craig, born: Maine; died Santa Clara, 8/13/1850

California Death Index for Thomas E. Watts
Thomas Elbert Watts, born 9/23/1870 in Indiana; father: Watts; died in Santa Clara, 4/21/1941

CONCLUSION:
I have found the correct Thomas E. Watts, son of William Watts and Lucinda Appleton.
* The names, birth dates, birth places all match
* 1910 census indicates Luella is his sister; same age as Luella who is daughter of William and Lucinda in the 1900 census.

The Problem:

There are two different Lucinda's married to William Watts that fit the right age. Lucinda Appleton may have been the mother of Thomas, Wyatt, Jennie, and Ethel.  However her marriage date would have made her the step mother of Lilly.  If that was the case, then William had to have been married to a different person before 1969.  On the other hand, if all the children had the same mother, then Lucinda Appleton was not the right person.

When I looked at William and Lucinda, I came up with a four different scenarios

1. Lucinda Appleton was NOT  the correct Lucinda on the census records rather Lucinda Downs was the correct Lucinda.
2. Lucinda Downs was NOT the correct Lucinda on the census records, rather Lucinda Appleton was the correct.
3.  There was one William Watts.  He married Lucinda Downs. She died. He remarried Lucinda Appleton
4. There are two different couples all together: 1) William Watts/Lucinda Downs who married in Crawford County, right next to Kentucky and 2) William Watts and Lucinda Appleton who married in Marion County, right next to Hendricks County where Lucinda Appleton was from and who had a previous wife.


Research on Lucinda Appleton:

* 1850 Census, Washington, Hendricks, Indiana.  Her father, James Appleton died in 1850.  She was living in her grandfather's home, Hugh P. Smith in 1850 when the census was taken and was age 6 making her birth year about 1844.

* 1860 Census, Washington, Hendricks, Indiana.  She is 16 years old and in the home of John Smith.  John Smith is from Ohio, the same place where her mother, Elizabeth Jane Smith (Appleton), was from.



Research on William Watts and Lucinda:

* 1880 Census, Elbridge, Edgar, Illinois: Head: William Watts, age 37; Wife: Lucinda Watts, age 37. Children:  Lilly, age 14; Thomas, age 10; Wyatt, age 8; Jennie, age 6; Ethel, age 3.

* 1900 Census, Otter Creek, Vigo, Indiana: Head: William Watts, age 57; Wife: Lucinda Watts, age 57; Ethel, age 22; Verna, age 16; Luella, 13.

Findings:

* Death Certificate for William Wyatt  Watts:  Death place and date: Terre Haut, Vigo, Indiana. Birthplace: Illinois. Father:  William Watts. Mother:  Lucinda Applegate (a common mistake for Appleton).  Information was provided by a niece.

* Birth Certificate for Verna Watts.  This certificate was a delayed recording. Birth place and date: Elbridge, Edgar, Illinois,  3 Jun 1883. Father: William Watts, living in Edgar, Illinois at time of her birth. Mother: Lucinda Appleton, living in Edgar, Illinois at time of her birth.

* Death Record for Lillie Watts: Name: Lilly Evelyn Pennington. Death place and date: Elbridge, Edgar, Illinois, 13 Feb 1932; Birthplace and date: Edgar, Illinois, 2 Nov 1865. Father: William Watts of Ohio; Mother: Jane Jinkins of Iowa.


Conclusion:

1. There are two separate couples: William Watts/Lucinda Appleton; William Watts/Lucinda Downs
2. The Lucinda who is in the census records in Elbridge, Edgar, Illinois and spouse of William Watts (b. May 1843 in Ohio) is Lucinda Appleton.
3. William Watts/Lucinda Downs never lived in Elbridge, Edgar, Illinois or Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana

Marriage(s) of Jesse Ernest Pennington b. 1859

QUESTION:  When was Jesse's marriage?  What is Ida Melissa's last name? Were there two marriages--one by June 1917 and one later in 1923?

RESEARCH:  Found records for Jesse E Pennington that verified several facts:

Birth: 27 May 1895, Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana; parents JH Pennington and Lilly Watts (daughter of William Watts and step daughter of Lucinda Appleton Watts)

WWI Draft: June 1917; confirmed birth date and place.  Indicated he was married

Grave Sites of Veterans: Death 1971, buried in Sante, Fe New Mexico

Wife:  The veterans records had the name and date of his wife, Ida Melissa Pennington, born 2 Feb 1895 and died 21 Dec 1973

Family Tree on Ancestry.com indicated that her maiden name was Fairchild and they were married March 1923.

William Watts, 1843 and Lucinda Appleton or Lucinda Downs?

I've come across a discrepancy on my records for William Watts.  In Indiana there were two William Watts who married Lucinda's within four years of each other.

Crawford county is at bottom of Indiana.  It borders Meed County Kentucky as well as Indian Counties: Orange, Washingtn, Harrison, Perry, Dubois.
