Ethel Mae Mabee b. 1882

Today I found three marriages for Ethel Mae Mabee, daughter of Gabriel D. Mabee and Ida Jane Clow. I am not sure how the first two marriages fit together, but I have plenty of records documenting the marriage to George Schwartz.

Marriage to George Schwartz:

The last marriage was to George Schwartz from Ashford, Cattaraugus, New York. This was proven by a marriage record which listed Ethel's parents as well as the fact that it was her second marriage. In addition, the 1930 census record shows Ethel Schwartz being born in South Dakota with her father being born in Canada and her mother being born in Illinois.

Marriage to Harvey N. Best

There is a marriage record for Ethel M. Mobee (This is the indexed spelling. I have not seen the actual record.) This record identifies a marriage to Harvey N. Best on December 26, 1906, in Lake City, Calhoun, Iowa. Her parents are listed as G.D. Mobee and Ida J. Clow. This is definitely Ethel May Mabee. has another marriage record for Harvey N. Best in 1910. This record lists him as divorced. South Dakota Marriages: Marriage Record for Harvey N. Best

Marriage to John D. Allyn

Ethel has three children with the last name of Allyn. The first was born

The 1930 census record for Little Valley, New York lists two of George's step children with the last name of Allyn. I found a couple of obituary records for Lyle Harvey Allyn that identify his father as John D. Allyn and his mother as Ethel Mabee Allyn.

The documentation for the that proves the census record is Ethel May Mabee comes from two different obituary records. There is a record on that is an index of people mentioned in Lyle Allyn's obituary. Among those names are John D. Allyn and Ethel Mabee Allyn.

I also found a transcript of the obituary on  The obituary reads as follows:

LYLE HARVEY ALLYN: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Greensboro News & Record (NC) - Friday, December 3, 2004

REIDSVILLE Lyle Harvey Allyn, 97, formerly of 402 Ransom Street, died Wednesday,
Dec. 1, 2004, at Brian Center of Eden.

Mr. Allyn was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late John D. and Ethel Mabee Allyn. He grew up in Salamanca, N.Y., and married Nella Mae Simms in 1935. He retired from Erie-Lackawanna Railroad after many years of service and had lived in Reidsville since 1974, where he was a member of First United Methodist Church, Gideons and the Jefferson Penn Masonic Lodge 384 AF & AM.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nella Allyn; son Clair Allyn and wife Betty of Chesterfield, Mo.; daughters, Dennie Kohler and husband Dennis of Hartsville, Ohio, Leah West and husband Don of Reidsville and Debbie Baldwin and husband Roger of Reidsville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home two hours prior to the funeral service.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1520 South Scales Street, Reidsville, NC 27320 or Gideons International, P. O. Box 510, Reidsville, NC 27323.

Condolences may be sent to the family at

Possible Conclusion

Lyle Harvey Allyn was born Februay 1, 1907, but Ethel M. Mabee wasn't married to Harvey N. Best until December 26, 1906. It is possible that Lyle H. Allyn was the illegitimate child of John D. Allyn. Lyle's middle  name is Harvey, which is the same name as her spouse.

It is possible that the marriage didn't last, and Ethel followed John D. Allyn to New York where they had two more children before that relationship ended for good. Was she ever married to John D. Allyn? It is possible that the answer is no. The marriage record of her marriage to George Schwartz indicated that it was her second marriage.

Lewis H. Smith and Phebe Ann Mott both b. 1805, Washington, Dutchess, New York

Trying to find the parents of Lewis H. Smith.

Census Records:

Phebe (Haight) Mott--Phebe Ann's mother
* 2 males, 20-30 (Edwin and ?)

Jacob Session appears on the same census page for Daniel Smith in 1820 and Phebe Smith in 1830. (handwriting makes double s look like lower case f)

1820 Federal Census

I looked at the 1820 Federal Census to see if I could identify families for Lewis and Phebe. It was easy to find Phebe's because I know her father. The census information reads:

Samuel Mott
* 1 male 10-15 (Edwin)
* 1 male 16-25 (?)
* 1 male 45+ (Samuel)
* 1 female 10-15 (Phebe Ann)
* 2 females 16-25 (Elizabeth and Martha)
* 1 female 45+ (Phebe)

There were several Smith names. Two of them have a male the right age for Lewis, which would be between the age of 10-15.

Ora Lee Reyburn and Samuel B. Saddler

28 April 2014

I am looking for evidence that Ora Lee Reyburn is the daughter of John Andrew Johnson Reyburn and Sallie E. Adkins. I have not been able to find that evidence. The connection for me came initially from a Family Tree in as well as a file from a correspondent from several years ago. I have not found any proof of that.

Some of my previous research about Ora Lee Reyburn is from March 2011. It includes the following:

27 March 2011. Still looking for proof that Ora Lee is John Andrew's daughter.

A family tree on lists Ora Lee Reyburn as daughter of John A Reyburn.  Also, she is listed in the 1900 Census in the same household. But the 1910 Census lists her as J.H. Reyburn's niece. I think that she is really his granddaughter instead but looking for proof.

Mary Appleton Monroe Stewart, Mother of Otis Elmer Monroe

Today I worked to find more information about Marry Appleton's family.

Background Information

Mary first married Jacob Monroe. They married in 1858 in Indiana. They had three children, Thomas A. Monroe, born about 1859; Otis Elmer Monroe, about born 1864; John Alva Monroe born about 1868.

In 1862, Jacob joined the Union army in the 70th Indiana Military Infantry; Company K, as a private.
A family tree on says he died in March 1872.

This makes sense because Mary married a second time in 1873. She married James H. Stewart. In the 1880 census, it shows Mary, James, and two of the boys living in Kansas. In 1882, Mary applied for a pension as the widow of Civil War soldier, James Monroe. At the time, she was living in Cherryvale, Kansas.

I have never been able to find any more information about Mary, James, or her children.

Research on March 29, 2014;  Possible Match for Thomas A. Monroe

 A family tree on Ancestry says that his name is Thomas Allen Monroe. And, it says that he was born in October 1859. Moreover, suggested records by Ancestry for this accompany this record link to the 1870 census for Thomas A. Monroe.

Need more information about to verify

Ora Lee Reyburn daughter of John Andrew Johnson Reyburn

This is a follow up to an entry dated March 7, 2011:

CONCLUSION: I have reached the conclusion that Ora Lee Reyburn is the daughter of John Andrew Johnson Reyburn. Here is my reasoning:

1880 Census
Jno Reyburn and S. E. Reyburn are listed as head and wife. S.E. Reyburn's record says she was born in Ohio. Ohio is right next to Kentucky. They have a daughter.

1900 Census
JH (John Henry) Reyburn is the head of the household. He was born in 1828.
John Reyburn is living in his father's house. The records indicate he is widowed. It also says their are two girls there:
Mollie A. Reyburn, born about 1880, her mother was born in Ohio. The record also says she is J.H.'s daughter.
Ora Lee Reyburn, born about 1882, her mother was born in Ohio. The record says she is J.H.'s neice.

These facts don't add up. For Mollie to be JH's daughter, he would have been 52 when she was born. Possible, but not likely. Moreover, his wife, Margaret Jane Fortney was born 1827 and died 1893. She was still alive when Mollie was born. This would have made her 53 when Mollie was born. Again, possible but not likely. In addition, Margaret was born in North Carolina, not Kentucky or Ohio.

1910 Census
In the 1910 Census, John Andrew is still living with his father, JH Reyburn.
Mollie Reyburn, age 31 is also living in the same household. This time, however, she is listed as the granddaughter to the head. Moreover, Mollie's mother is listed as being born in Ohio.

Given these facts, I believe it is safe to conclude that Ora Lee Reyburn is the daughter of Sallie E. Adkins and John Andrew Johnson Reyburn.
